Fuzhuan Cha is one of the best-known dark teas (Hei Cha 黑茶) from Hunan Province. Its history is closely tied to the ancient tea trade routes along which tea traveled from central China to the northern and western regions. There, it became an integral part of daily life for nomadic peoples such as the Mongols, Tibetans, and Uyghurs.

Since fresh vegetables were in short supply in these regions for a long time, tea played an important role in both diet and culture. A saying has been passed down to this day: the people of the steppe could go several days without food, but not a single day without tea.

Fuzhuan Cha originates in Anhua County (安化) in the Wuling Mountains in western Hunan. Dense forests, a mild climate, and unique geological conditions—including ancient sedimentary rocks—create ideal conditions for growing high-quality teas.

Fuzhuan Cha owes its name to the traditional production period during the hot summer months. During the fermentation process, the microorganism Eurotium cristatum forms naturally, producing the characteristic golden-yellow “golden flowers” (金花, Jinhua)—a hallmark of this tea’s quality.

The aging process gives Fuzhuan Cha its distinctive character: a robust yet mild infusion with a gentle sweetness and a deep, warm aroma typical of Hunan’s dark teas.
